Suffering a Stroke is Terrifying + Traumatic Experience…
For both survivors and their loved ones. And for those who survive, recovery can be a daunting prospect. Support, love, and hope are all key ingredients in a successful stroke recovery.
And no one understands this better than Dana Rivera…
On June 29, 2009, Dana’s life changed – Forever!
Despite being only 44 years old, far from the age of a typical stroke victim, and the picture of good health, Dana suffered an ischemic stroke. The unexpected attack caused Hemiplegia (paralysis) of the entire left side of her body. The stroke resulted from a hidden condition known as PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale), a very common congenital cardiac anomaly.
Though reeling from the shock and trauma of her stroke, Dana was determined to regain all feeling in her left side. The constant encouragement and support from her husband, Rick, her children, her family and many friends sparked the motivation and inner-strength that Dana harnessed to mount her recovery.
In addition to physical and occupational therapy, Dana launched a daily walking program. She began with short distances, and steadily extended her reach. Striving to go just a little further each day. And day-by-day, inch-by-inch, Dana rebuilt her balance and regained her mobility. These efforts, along with Yoga, which taught Dana breathing and additional balancing techniques, were the keys to Dana’s physical recovery.
Emboldened by the knowledge of just how lucky she was, Dana felt it was imperative that she shares her story with other stroke survivors. Following her recovery, Dana became a Certified Peer Specialist and a Stoke Support Group volunteer at Santa Monica’s UCLA Hospital. She’s also a frequent speaker at stroke fundraising charity events and stroke awareness gatherings. In addition, Dana shares her message of hope in print publication interviews, radio and televisions appearances, and online forums.
